The Black Hills Chapter of NAVHDA hosted and ran a flawlessly orchestrated three-day testing weekend June 27, 28 and 29th. We had a dog run each day-all were from the same litter pairing (Yetta and Cedar). Amazingly, Brush Dale's You Can't Fence Me In-Yetta's, heat cycle worked out perfectly for a mad dash out to Arlington, VA to breed her to Belvoir Bullet Cooper-Cooper. We were back with a day and a half to get our feet back on the ground after 50 hours of driving, before volunteering on Friday and Saturday. We then ran our Glitzy Spitz last on Sunday due to her heat cycle. The grounds were in the best shape we've seen them in since running the inaugural test back in 2019 with Yetta, Aster and Soda.

Creed's a beautiful beast! Even though Creeds owner Chad is less than an hour away from the training and testing grounds his work never cooperated with training weekends. Creed ran the test "cold turkey" having never been to a NAVHDA event-training or test. Chad was a super cool cat too. Unfortunately, Creed wanted to hunt the creek bottom for half of the test instead of searching the field where the birds were planted. Eventually, after some serious coaxing he came up and did his business. This cost him in his Search and Cooperation scores though. They rounded out the test with an exceptional track and retrieve of the rooster and a much needed swim.

Utility Test Prize II 179
Sage and Sean worked hard together to polish their obedience and handling skills to ready for this event. The Duck Search proved the crux as usual, though Sage did bang it out of the park with an amazing effort, which unfortunately included a resend that she completed willingly. Unfortunately the 3 in the Duck Search sealed their fate, along with a 3 in Pointing. Sage was first dog in the field. It was humid, with no wind. Scenting and locating birds was extremely difficult and this led Sage to be a bit uncertain as to where the birds were which in turn affected her point score. She was relocating and creeping until she locked on to birds. Their entire day was fun to watch and be a part of. We had the fortune to "gun" for Sean and Sage in the field and it was a joy to watch them work together. Sage and Sean truly are a team of one. I suspect they will have another go at it before the training season is over.
The weekend finished Sunday, June 30 with
Cedars Point Glitzy Spitz-Glitzy

Going last has advantages. The wind normally picks up later in the day, however the temps go up too. There can also be a gluttony of birds in the field, which can be a good and a bad thing. Often it depends on the dog who ran before and how well they do in their field search. Conditions, however, always dictate dog work. Judges for the last day of testing ran dogs in an area we've never held field runs in before, at any level of testing. The cover crop that had recently been planted there took off after torrential rains and triple digit heat. This fit well for our young dogs. The traditional field was thick as molasses in cover, it was even a challenge to walk in at times. UT and GDT dogs were disappearing at times in the heavier cover. Temps dropped from unseasonable hot on Friday and Saturday to overcast and bearable Sunday afternoon.
As mentioned Glitzy ran last due to her heat cycle. She hadn't been worked in some time either. Breeding Yetta in Virginia, volunteering with a professional in ND had dictated a considerable amount of our time going into the test. It didn't matter in the least. Glitzy pointed 6 birds in the field standing them long enough to collared on the last three. This was done with the judges blessings. Her track saved her handler who had a poor release. In fact, two birds, one from the field and the rooster from the track were delivered to hand. The water element was inviting and Glitzy loves to swim.

All Three Pups and Their Handlers Pulled the Trigger
Testing is always a collective effort. It's about more than just dog and handler. It takes a well honed machine of volunteers as well. Black Hills NAVHDA has all the above. Judges also need be thanked. Service to humanity at it's best, including best friends. We wanted to thank all those who gave back. We also want thank amazing buyers for the love and companionship they've shown their loyal friends. Breeding is enjoyable because of all of you. With sincere appreciation we are thankful and are thoroughly enjoying the journey!
