Why Prairie Light
Prairie Light didn't begin with a camera. It began with years spent breeding dogs, hunting wild birds, volunteering with NAVHDA, and working alongside people who care deeply about the future of versatile hunting dogs.
Along the way, I realized that many of the moments shaping our community are remarkably fleeting. A young dog discovering birds for the first time. A handler's quiet confidence before a test. A breeder watching generations of thoughtful decisions come together. A prairie sunrise that looks different every season and every year.
Those moments become memories almost as quickly as they happen.
Prairie Light was created because some stories deserve more than memory. They deserve to be preserved.
Behind the Camera
Photography isn't separate from the work I already do—it's an extension of it.
For years I've pursued thoughtful breeding, collected longitudinal breed data, participated in NAVHDA testing, and volunteered within a community dedicated to improving versatile hunting dogs. Each experience has reinforced the same belief: stewardship requires paying attention.
The camera simply became another way to contribute.
Sometimes I'm photographing a NAVHDA test while preparing to run my own dog the next day.
Sometimes I'm documenting a breeding program or creating a stud dog page that will become part of a dog's history. Other days I'm walking the prairie at first light because the landscape itself deserves to be remembered.
I'm behind the camera because these people, these dogs, these places, and these traditions have shaped my life. Photographing them is one way I can give something back.
Why Natural Light?
Natural light tells the truth.
The first light of morning, the warm glow before sunset, and the changing skies across the prairie reveal character that artificial lighting often hides. They don't create the story—they simply allow it to be seen.
Whether photographing a versatile hunting dog standing proudly in native grass, a breeder introducing a new litter, or a sweeping landscape shaped by generations of stewardship, I believe authenticity matters.
